Toronto was buzzing on November 27, when popular Filipino actor and celebrity, John Lloyd Cruz, spent over an hour chatting, taking selfies and entertaining fans at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.

Fans registered for the event online, while others lined up in person for hours before the event, just to get a chance to see Cruz, have fun and win some fantastic prizes.

Hugs and selfies and John Lloyd Cruz – oh my!

The event started off with a hilarious game where three women from the crowd, Lindsay, Chloe and Joyce, watched a short clip from Cruz’s 2007 romantic hit movie, “One More Chance” and acted out the scene with him on stage! Then, the crowd cheered for their favourite performance and the three ecstatic women got hugs and selfies with Cruz, along with prizes from Western Union.

Next, Cruz walked through Western Union’s new mobile money transfer app, giving the crowd a personal tutorial on how to use it to send money to more than 200 countries and territories around the world. He also unveiled the secret phrase – JLClovesWU – to text to a special number for a chance to win one of three $500 cash prizes.

Nearly 14,000 people watching live on Facebook

The contest was open not only to the 500 participants at the event, but also the nearly 14,000 people watching live on Facebook.

Western Union’s Vice President and General Manager, Juan Carlos Blanco, was there too, to thank the Filipino community for its support and give away three $50 cash prizes. A “Mannequin Challenge” for Western Union staff stole the show, before Cruz invited fans to come to the stage for more hugs and selfies at the end of the event.

Everyone walked away with huge smiles and great memories of meeting one of the Philippines’ most treasured actors, and Facebook friends posted dozens of likes and “I❤JLC” messages during and after the show.

If you didn’t get the chance to see the event in person, you can view it on Facebook now.
